My Deak Wace, In this letter I propose to give a short account of the work on which I have been engaged since the publication of my book "On the Origins of Religion and Languages." I begin with a short statement of what I have done in regard to languages On looking at what I have written in that book, it will be observed that very considerable gaps occur, which have been noticed by some of my critics, and which I hardly thought it would be possible for me to fill up, considering my advanced age. Taking the three great groups of languages, Semitic, Aryan, and Turanian, I may state that my knowledge of the Semitic languages extends with more or less completeness, to all that family. The second group comprises all languages known as Aryan. Of these the Asiatic families, represented in the most ancient form by the Sanscrit and Zend or old Persian, have been discussed in my work. The modern representatives of each of these branches are the Persian and vernacular languages of modern India. With the latter I had scarcely any acquaintance when I wrote; but I have since been able to look at the Hindustani spoken throughout India, and the Guzerati which comes next to it in importance both as regards religion and intercourse. To these two languages I shall not have occasion to refer; it may suffice to state that the works on the former of these two languages are remarkable for extent and completeness.
